Crowning the highest hill in the historic center, the Castelo de São Jorge has watched over Lisbon for over a thousand years. A Visigothic fortress, Muslim citadel, and residence of the kings of Portugal after the 1147 reconquest, today it preserves eleven towers, battlements, and courtyards shaded by pine and olive trees where peacocks roam. Walking along its ramparts is like stepping out onto the city's best balcony: the red rooftops of Alfama, the Baixa Pombalina, the 25 de Abril Bridge, and the immense Tagus estuary unfold at your feet. The site also houses a small museum center with pieces found during excavations and the remains of the old Islamic neighborhood. At dusk, when the sun turns the walls gold, the visit becomes one of the most memorable moments of any trip to Lisbon. 📷 Photographs courtesy of Jakub Hałun (CC BY 4.0), via Wikimedia Commons.
