Iglesias del Carmo y de las Carmelitas

Porto · Ad No. 935

Next to Gomes Teixeira square and the University, two seemingly twin baroque churches share a wall... or almost. Between Igreja do Carmo and Igreja dos Carmelitas hides a house just one meter wide, built so that monks and nuns wouldn't share a wall and, according to tradition, inhabited until the 20th century. The side facade of Igreja do Carmo is covered by a gigantic tile panel depicting the foundation of the Carmelite order, one of the most photographed in Porto. Inside both, the baroque gilded woodcarving shines in all its splendor. Admission to the churches is free, and Livraria Lello and Clérigos Tower are just a step away. 📷 Photographs courtesy of T meltzer (CC BY-SA 4.0), Jsamwrites (CC BY-SA 4.0) and Krzysztof Golik (CC BY-SA 4.0), via Wikimedia Commons.
