Founded in 1911 in the former convent of São Francisco, right in the heart of Chiado, the MNAC —simply known as Museu do Chiado— brings together the benchmark collection of Portuguese art from Romanticism to the present day. Paintings by Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso and José de Almada Negreiros converse with sculptures and contemporary works in rooms renovated by the French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, who managed to preserve the industrial and monastic memory of the building. Its temporary exhibitions, always carefully curated, and the small sculpture garden with a café make it a perfect haven for a cultural break among the bookshops, historic cafes and shops of Lisbon's most elegant neighborhood. 📷 Photographs courtesy of GualdimG (CC BY-SA 4.0), Bosc d'Anjou, NY, USA (CC BY 2.0) and Hipersyl (CC BY 4.0), via Wikimedia Commons.
