Castel Sant'Angelo was built in the 2nd century as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and later became a fortress, papal residence, and prison. Today it houses the National Museum of Castel Sant'Angelo, where you can visit former papal rooms, secret passageways, weapon collections, and historical exhibitions. From its panoramic terrace you get some of the best views of Rome, featuring the Tiber River, the Vatican, and St. Peter's Basilica.
